Makoto is Hanza's replacement and serves as Third Division Lieutenant Izuru Kira's rival. He becomes Kumoi's unofficial apprentice and emerges as the main antagonist during the second half of the Captain Amagai arc.
Physically, Makoto bears a striking resemblance to the Arrancar Szayel Aporro Granz, though with brown hair and a noticeably calmer demeanor. He dresses in the standard Shinigami uniform layered with a purple sweater and purple-rimmed glasses, which appear to function as some kind of data-gathering device.
Despite seeming approachable with his subordinates on the surface, he's brutally intolerant of failure—he calls fallen soldiers "trash" with the same cold detachment as Ulquiorra Schiffer. His jealousy of Kira's lieutenant position is obvious; he frequently insists that Kira is unworthy of the rank, especially since Kira couldn't prevent his captain's betrayal, and openly believes he himself is superior in both strength and technique.
His Zanpakutou is called Reppuu (烈風, "gale"), activated with the command "rage violently." The Shikai form transforms it into a massive three-bladed weapon that he controls telekinetically, letting him strike from any angle.
Back at the Soul Reaper Academy, Makoto was inexplicably held back a year despite being top of his class—something that would later make sense given his ego problem. He convinced himself that his classmates disliked him out of jealousy rather than recognizing his actual arrogance. In combat, he had no qualms cutting down allies to eliminate a Hollow, even when the Hollow was already going down. He genuinely believed weak Soul Reapers didn't deserve to live, and killed several of his own squad-mates to justify this philosophy. That callous disregard eventually landed him in an expeditionary force under Captain Shuusuke Amagai. His hunger for power and recognition caught Kumoi's attention, who equipped him with a bakotou.
