Kondou holds the title of Shinsengumi commander, though he's best known for being surprisingly hands-off about it. Hijikata tends to overshadow him in actual decision-making, and fans often note that Kondou gets overruled more than you'd expect from someone in charge. That said, he's got a much softer touch than his vice-commander—he's more forgiving with Tetsunosuke's mistakes and actually puts up with Souji's constant fooling around. Where Hijikata plays it safe, Kondou's willing to take bigger risks, which sometimes makes him the more impulsive of the two despite the hierarchy.
