Heinz grew up as the son of Petra and a police officer in the same town where Schumann lived. Ambitious to climb the ranks, he often neglected his mother and her emotional needs in pursuit of career advancement.
When Tenma arrived in the city, Heinz became obsessed with capturing him—so much so that he nearly disrupted his mother's surgery to pursue the lead. Schumann had to step in and talk sense into him, getting him to put the gun away from the operating room. Eventually, Schumann managed to convince Heinz that arresting Tenma would be the wrong call given everything he'd actually done. So Heinz contacted his superiors and backed off, claiming he'd simply mistaken another man for Tenma since they were both Asian.
