Igneel raised Natsu from childhood, teaching him everything from basic literacy to Dragon Slayer Magic—the ancient art that lets users absorb and harness draconic power. He clearly cared for the kid, though his parenting style was. unconventional. He'd secretly watch over Natsu from a distance even after vanishing, suggesting his protectiveness ran deep.
As a dragon, Igneel's personality could swing pretty hard. He came across as arrogant at times (Grandeeney once heard him brag about being "the one and only Igneel"), and he wasn't afraid to show a fierce side when provoked. According to Grandeeney, he shared Natsu's tendency to go overboard with things—a trait that apparently ran in their dynamic.
On July 7th of X777, Igneel disappeared without explanation, along with several other dragons including Grandeeney and Metalicana. No one's ever figured out why. For Natsu, this became the defining mystery of his life. Finding Igneel again became his driving goal, and he's spent years chasing down leads about the dragon's location.
