The Karibusa family carries a dark legacy: generations back, one of their ancestors—a mushishi of remarkable skill—sealed a catastrophic forbidden mushi inside herself to save the world. The price was steep—her body blackened with ink, her life cut short. But she left behind a child, and with it, a curse that resurfaces roughly every other generation.
Those marked by the forbidden mushi become Recorders. They're bound to an isolated house, their bodies partially paralyzed and darkened by the very thing they've learned to weaponize. The trick is listening closely when other mushi die—really listening to their stories—and using that knowledge to write the forbidden mushi's compulsion onto paper, sealing it away bit by bit. It's meticulous, lonely work, and only family and the occasional visiting mushishi ever see them.
Tanyuu is the current Recorder, the fourth in the line. The curse settled in her right leg, leaving it useless, but she's gotten damn good at moving around on crutches and hopping when she needs to. Despite the constant pain the forbidden mushi inflicts, she genuinely loves and respects all mushi—there's no bitterness in her about it. She's got a quiet pride and a real kindness to her, and frankly, nobody does the job better.
What she wants most, though, is to finally finish sealing the forbidden mushi away once and for all. And after that? Freedom to travel and be with Ginko.
