Stephen is part of Near's investigation team alongside Lidner and Rester, and becomes crucial to bringing down Kira. When Near suspects Mikami, he assigns Gevanni to tail him—documenting his habits and tracing his connection to the Death Note. Before the final confrontation at the warehouse, Gevanni pulls off a key operation: he swipes both the real and fake Death Notes from Mikami and alters one of the fakes. He then creates a replacement fake to swap in for the real one, which ultimately becomes the evidence that exposes Light as Kira.
Mikami's Shinigami Eyes allow him to learn Gevanni's true name: Stephen Loud.
Three years after Light's death, Gevanni makes a brief appearance in a one-shot chapter alongside Rester and Lidner, though he doesn't speak. The cameo hints he may still be working with them under Near's successor as the new L.
