Makeru positions herself as Komi Shouko's rival, though the rivalry is pretty one-sided—mostly in her own head. She's constantly trying to prove herself against Komi, only to keep falling short, yet she keeps coming back for more. While Komi occupies that untouchable "goddess" status in their class, Makeru has embraced the "commoner" label for herself, which she seems to wear as a badge of honor (or at least as her identity).
Despite—or maybe because of—her underdog status, she's managed to build her own fanbase. Her admirers tend to be the self-sacrificing type who get off on supporting the perpetual underdog, which definitely suits her whole thing.
