The series' protagonist. Ao is a 13-year-old boy and the biological son of Renton Thurston and Eureka. He takes after his father in most respects, though he inherited his mother's distinctive hair, eye, and skin tone.
His backstory is complicated. Eureka literally fell from the sky into a bay near Iwato Jima and eventually gave birth to Ao there. Around ten years before the story begins, the islanders decided that Eureka and Ao's presence was angering a local deity called the Sea Colossus—which they believe summoned the Scub Coral—and pressured the American Armed Forces to take her away. Ao was left behind and raised by Toshio Fukai, his mother's only real friend on the island.
Everything changes when Ao retrieves his mother's bracelet from a smuggler named Gazelle, who then convinces him to pilot a mecha called the RA272 Nirvash. Both the robot and its name come from Eureka and Renton. Stuck between hostile armies and alienated by his own community, Ao joins Team Pied Piper largely as a way to search for his mother.
As the half-Coralian offspring of a human and an alien, Ao has developed some unusual abilities: he can sense hidden truths about people and see Trapar particles with his bare eyes.
