Mintach worked as press secretary for Congressman Joseph Boltzmann, a German Parliament member caught up in a murder investigation. Boltzmann was suspected in the death of callgirl Erika Lemser, allegedly his former lover. Mintach remained completely loyal, convinced of his boss's innocence and fiercely defensive when Inspector Lunge's investigation began suggesting he'd helped cover up the affair. Lunge's relentless, cold approach to the case pushed Mintach to a breaking point. Unable to handle the suspicion and pressure, Mintach took his own life—leaving behind a note that still insisted Boltzmann was innocent.
Losing Mintach as both a witness and information source significantly hurt the investigation. The BKA station chief decided to pull Lunge off the case entirely. What remained was the Middle-Aged Couple Murders, which became Lunge's sole focus. He pursued it with obsessive intensity, zeroing in on Kenzo Tenma as his prime suspect—though the actual killer was Johan Liebert, working with associates.
