He was petty, short-sighted, and obsessed with outpacing his fellow officers—often at the expense of his own men. His reckless tactics racked up casualties, and he had no real interest in the human cost as long as he could claim a victory. When Major Armstrong suffered a complete breakdown after witnessing the slaughter of Ishvalan civilians, Fessler only made things worse by tearing into him rather than offering any support. Even when his blunders got soldiers killed, he'd call them "home runs" if the objective was technically met.
His reign didn't last long. When Colonel Basque Grand showed up with Logue Lowe, hoping to arrange a meeting with King Bradley, Fessler arrogantly refused and sent everyone back to fighting. Grand responded by shooting him point-blank in the chest—a moment apparently witnessed by several soldiers, none of whom felt the need to report it as murder. Every soldier present stuck to the story that it was just a stray bullet, which probably tells you everything you need to know about how much they despised Fessler and his methods. Basque Grand took over the Kanda post after him.
