Tokagerou is a 600-year-old spirit from the same era as Amidamaru. He's best known for developing his own fighting technique, Tokage Kenpo (Lizard Style), which he earned through a lifetime of infamy as a bandit leader. His skin turned a distinctive lizard green—a physical manifestation of the hatred that kept him from passing on after his death.
Born into poverty, Tokagerou became a thief out of desperation, eventually rising to command a band of bandits that terrorized the region six centuries ago. His past is marked by tragedy; he was forced to eat his own dead mother just to survive. When Amidamaru encountered him and his group near their hideout on a hill, the fight didn't last long—Amidamaru killed them all, and Tokagerou never forgot it.
In the present day, he possesses Yoh's friend Umemiya Ryunosuke to take revenge on Amidamaru, who doesn't even remember him. His first move is to steal the Harusame from a museum and attack You and Amidamaru directly. The conflict forces them to destroy the sacred sword just to save Ryuu's life.
What makes Tokagerou interesting is the contradiction everyone eventually notices: he calls himself a nasty villain, but he's really just a softie at heart who misses maternal comfort. When You offers to let him possess him instead of continuing to use Ryuu, Tokagerou agrees—ostensibly to kill You—but can't go through with it. He leaves peacefully instead, suggesting that underneath all that bitterness, there's something worth saving.
