Joel works as a detective for the 18th branch of Outside, though "works" might be generous—he's honestly pretty unmotivated about the whole thing. He's best known for being easily influenced, especially by Sonia, who has a habit of bending (or outright breaking) Outside's rules. Fans often note that he tends to go along with whatever she suggests, even when he probably shouldn't. His partnership with her drives a lot of his involvement in cases, for better or worse.
