Maria's a Chasseur—basically a vampire hunter—who's grown up believing what the Church teaches: that vampires are inherently evil and need to be eliminated. It's shaped her entire approach to the job. When Roland Fortis, a newcomer to the Paris Chasseur division, shows up, Maria finds herself working under his command alongside her partner Georges.
The turning point comes when the three of them stumble across Roland in the catacombs under Notre Dame, and what starts as a chance encounter turns into an unexpected alliance. They end up pursuing Vanitas and his vampire accomplice Noé Archiviste—which, on paper, should've been straightforward. But as it turns out, these two factions discover they're actually on the same side about something that matters more: stopping a guy named Moreau, who's been capturing vampires for illegal experiments. It's enough common ground that Maria and the others agree to set aside the usual vampire-hunter-versus-vampire hostility and actually work together. It's a pretty big shift from her original worldview, though the story doesn't make a huge deal about how she processes that change.
