His strict code of honor has made him seem weird or even creepy to plenty of folks, and it's cost him real friendships—there's a girl from his past he still regrets losing over it. He's spent years trying to blend in, to be normal, but the second someone's in genuine danger, his instincts take over and he can't help himself. He wears a mask whenever this happens, purely out of shame at how he acts.
When he finds out Makio's living alone and forbidden from dating anyone, he decides that's his problem to solve. He moves in to protect her, convinced it's the right thing to do—which, knowing him, probably means she's about to have a very strange houseguest on her hands.
