Shion Izumi was a mentally unstable but gifted teenager who'd already won his freedom from Gantz before the series began—yet he wanted back in. He went on a shooting spree through Shinjuku with an SMG and pistol, killing at least three named players and leaving around 387 bystanders dead or wounded in broad daylight. The rampage brought Gantz fresh recruits, though Izumi himself got killed in a standoff with Kurono, forcing him back into the game.
What made Izumi stand out was his swordsmanship. He discovered the Gantz Saber—a katana with a retractable blade hidden in the apartment—and became the first to wield it. Fans often note him as Kurono's cold, arrogant opposite: a rival obsessed purely with being the strongest Gantz fighter, willing to gun down innocent civilians like Tae Kojima if it served that goal.
When Izumi hit 100 points a second time, he picked Option #2 for a powerful new weapon. Before he could use it, an army of vampires attacked him outside his apartment. After slaughtering the rank-and-file, four vampire leaders closed in. Izumi took down three of them and was dueling the blonde leader, Hikawa, when his girlfriend Ryōko rushed to help. He shielded her from Hikawa's final strike with his own back. Standing amid the vampire corpses, Izumi figured he was definitely heading to hell.
As Phase I ended, Izumi had not been revived.
