Synopsis

Kei Kurono is a cynical loner who keeps his distance from people, convinced they're all capable of cruelty. That changes one day at the subway station when his classmate Masaru Katou jumps onto the tracks to save a drunk man. For once, Kei acts on impulse and follows him down. They manage to rescue the guy, but get hit by the train in the process. Kei wakes up in an apartment full of dead strangers gathered around a massive black sphere with a glass-like surface. Everyone there recently died, and the sphere—which survivors call Gantz—assigns them a mission: hunt down and kill a bizarre creature. Before they head out, Gantz outfits them with power suits and guns. The mission turns out to be way deadlier than advertised, but Kei survives. Back at the apartment, Gantz grades the survivors based on their combat performance, handing out points as rewards. Here's the catch: Kei gets to go back to his normal life, but he can be yanked away at any moment for another mission. While Katou dreads these forced returns, Kei finds purpose in them. He lives for the fights now, gaining confidence and genuinely caring about the people fighting alongside him. But as the creatures get stronger and stranger, the line between Gantz's missions and his everyday world starts to blur in dangerous ways.
