Masaru Katou is the kind of guy who genuinely wants to help people—it's just who he is. Since his parents are gone, he's raised his younger brother and is pretty fiercely protective of him. He naturally falls into leadership roles because he's got the authority for it, but there's a major problem: he can't bring himself to hurt anyone, which becomes a real liability in Gantz.
He and Kei Kurono go way back as childhood friends, though they'd lost touch. They run into each other again on the day they both die—Katou was trying to help a drunk off the train tracks when Kurono, not thrilled about it, reluctantly jumps in to help.
