Komui Lee runs the science department at the Black Order as its supervisor, and he's Lenalee's older brother. Their parents were killed by Akuma when they were kids, and when the Order discovered Lenalee was compatible with an Innocence, they basically took her away from him. She was kept there against her will and got so desperate she attempted suicide—they had to strap her to a bed. Things changed once Komui joined the Order himself, becoming Science Department Supervisor specifically to be near her. That's when Lenalee finally started to feel like the place was home.
On the surface, Komui's a goofball—lazy, weird, and honestly kind of sadistic depending on the day. He runs on coffee, specifically whatever Lenalee's made, and will do almost anything to dodge actual work. He's famous for disappearing from his office (Reever always has to hunt him down), staying on the phone long after people hang up, or worse, building malfunctioning robots like Komurin II, which nearly destroyed headquarters. His desk is legendarily messy, and he once lost Allen's letter of recommendation from General Cross, which caused the whole Order to think Allen was an intruder. Apparently his colleagues trust him 99% and want to murder him 1% of the time. The one thing that'll snap him out of sleep faster than anything else? Mentioning that Lenalee's getting married.
But there's more to him than the chaos. Komui genuinely feels guilty about putting Exorcists and Finders in danger, and he tries to make it right—better uniforms, reinforced equipment, that kind of thing. He's the one who repairs damaged Innocences, though the process looks brutal. When funeral rites came around for fallen soldiers, he showed his tougher side, refusing to let General Yeager's body go home and insisting on cremation instead. He's also the type to stand his ground: when Special Auditor Malcom Rouvelier tried ordering him to keep the Akuma Egg, Komui refused and ordered its destruction on his own authority.
There's something almost supernatural between him and Lenalee—they seem to share some kind of telepathic connection. Komui collapsed the moment she was drowning, and she can sense when he's napping from across the world. He's pretty close with the cook Jerry and basically lives in the kitchen when he needs to hide out.
