Banchina was Usopp's mother and Yasopp's wife. She encouraged her husband to chase his dreams at sea with the Red-Haired Pirates, even though it meant raising their son alone.
Usopp grew up watching his mother's health decline until she became bedridden. Day after day, he'd tell her the same lie—that his father was coming back to take them away—hoping it might lift her spirits and help her recover. Deep down, Banchina knew Yasopp would never return. Before she died, she told Usopp she was actually glad his father had gone to sea. Even after her death, Usopp kept repeating that same lie out of habit, long after he had any reason to.
In the Loguetown filler arcs, Yasopp later admitted he'd been useless and helpless to do anything for his wife and child. When one of Shanks' crew members asked if abandoning them was "for the better," the crew cheered like he'd made the right call—a moment that really highlights how little they understood what he'd left behind.
