Abengane made a name for himself as one of the hunters Battera brought on to tackle his game. His real talent didn't surface until Bomber slapped a curse on him—that's when everyone realized he could actually remove Nen curses, which is a pretty rare ability. Turns out he's the Jyounen user the Genei Ryodan had been hunting for all along.
Later, Hisoka brought him in specifically to break Chrollo's curse, which shows just how valuable that skill of his is.
