Col starts out as a kid with big religious ambitions—he wants to join the clergy. That plan falls apart pretty quickly when he gets duped with forged travel documents. Things get worse when he tries to use them at a checkpoint and the guard immediately calls him out. Desperate, he reaches out to Lawrence for help.
Lawrence takes pity on him and decides to help the kid out. More importantly, he becomes Col's unofficial mentor on economics and commerce—basically everything Col didn't know he needed to learn about how trade actually works in the world. It's a turning point for the kid.
From there, Col ends up joining Lawrence and Holo as they travel around. He becomes a regular part of their crew, picking up practical knowledge as they go from place to place.
