Yatala is basically a twenty-foot-tall giant whose whole existence stems from a growth potion his father—a slave with extensive knowledge of herbs and plants—gave him as a child. The idea was supposed to make him powerful and invincible, but things went sideways fast. His parents were killed shortly after he took the potion, and the trauma seems to have triggered his massive growth. By adulthood, he'd reached that full twenty-foot height.
For a while, Yatala was basically a force of destruction. He killed the elephant responsible for his parents' deaths, then spent years terrorizing villages and slaughtering livestock, leaving a trail of devastation. People tried everything to stop him—someone even came at him with a bazooka—but nothing worked.
What finally changed things was Virudhaka, also known as Prince Crystal, who took a different approach. Instead of fighting Yatala, he offered him a place in the Kosalan palace guard. It actually worked. The promise of a real position and purpose is what actually managed to tame him.
