Henschel is a Second Lieutenant in the Amestrian State Military serving under Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong at Fort Briggs. He's known as one of Armstrong's most loyal officers.
When Sloth attacks Briggs and tears open a tunnel, Henschel makes his concerns heard—he doesn't want the entrance sealed shut with soldiers still inside. Armstrong doesn't seem to acknowledge his protest at first, but later pulls him aside to reveal that Edward Elric secretly created a back way in. This lets Henschel, Buccaneer, and a handful of others go down after all. They manage to find survivors despite the wreckage left by Pride, which clearly means a lot to him.
After Armstrong gets reassigned to Central Command, Henschel and Buccaneer talk about what's coming next. Both of them figure Central's new people are going to have no clue what hit them when they try to command Briggs' soldiers.
