Oskar von Reuenthal serves as a rear admiral in Reinhard's fleet and ranks among his most capable commanders—usually mentioned in the same breath as Wolfgang Mittermeyer when discussing Reinhard's military talent.
His early life was brutal. Born to a wealthy but low-ranking father and a mother from an old, broke noble family who married purely for money, Reuenthal came into the world with heterochromia—one blue eye, one brown. Since both parents had blue eyes, his mother took it as proof of infidelity. She attempted to gouge out his brown eye while he was still a baby, then killed herself. His father blamed the boy for everything. Reuenthal grew up despised and neglected.
The military became his escape. He climbed the ranks fast, finding in warfare the only thing that made life worth living. At Iserlohn fortress, he met Mittermeyer, and the two formed what's probably Reuenthal's only genuine friendship. When the nobility tried to have Mittermeyer detained and executed on false charges, Reuenthal swore loyalty to Reinhard without hesitation—the price was Reinhard's intervention on his friend's behalf.
On the surface, Reuenthal is the picture of composure: a brilliant strategist second only to Reinhard himself, with sharp tactical instincts. Underneath, though, he's a pressure cooker. His childhood trauma left him drowning in self-hatred and deeply mistrustful of women. He's handsome and successful in romance by conventional standards, but he sabotages every relationship. Ambitious and proud, he entertains thoughts of betrayal regularly—he's only held back by genuine respect for Reinhard and the debt between them. His flagship is the Tristan.
