Hobbies: Shogi
Rei is the series protagonist and a five dan professional shogi player—a rank he achieved while still in middle school, which is pretty rare. His backstory is tragic: his parents and sister died in a car accident, leaving him in the care of Kouda, a friend of his father's who also became his shogi mentor. After completing middle school and turning pro, Rei struck out on his own rather than pursuing a traditional high school education. But eventually he felt the pull to actually attend school like a normal teenager, so he enrolled in high school about a year later than his peers would have. He's based in Rokugatsu-chou, a city whose name literally means "June town."
