Jirou is a laid-back ex-science teacher who ditched his job to chase Michio Hazama's idol dream. He's the "S" for Science in S.E.M., though his real reason for jumping ship wasn't pure passion—he was sold once someone pointed out how much money they could actually make. Not that he's lying about his priorities; he's pretty open about wanting to get rich.
That said, there's more to him than the casual, somewhat-slovenly act suggests. He has a few genuine soft spots underneath, though he gets bashful the moment anyone calls him out on it. His kindness showed early on when the group was bombing audition after audition—he was ready to quit until Michio confessed he felt guilty for dragging both him and Rui Maita into the whole thing. Jirou pointed out that staying as teachers wouldn't have landed them any better off anyway, which seemed to settle it for him.
His relaxed nature means he's not great at taking care of himself or his appearance. He infamously used to brew coffee using the school's science equipment (much to Michio's frustration), and he generally doesn't do much to maintain himself. But Michio's noted that when Jirou actually cleans up and carries himself properly, he can look surprisingly sharp. He just never bothers most of the time.
