As a Quinx—and former member of both the Quinx Squad and the TSC—he occupies that strange middle ground between human and ghoul that defines the program.
Physically, Mutsuki's appearance shifts noticeably as Tokyo Ghoul:re progresses. Early on, he's slim and bronze-skinned with dark ivy-colored hair that gradually lightens; his build becomes more athletic as the series continues. He has pale, olive-colored eyes, though his right eye features a permanently active kakugan with a dark gray sclera, which he's covered with a medical eyepatch for years before switching to a leather one—a Christmas gift from his former mentor Haise Sasaki. Like most CCG investigators, he sticks to formal wear and a short white trenchcoat. He also wears a cropped compression panel across his torso, held in place by clips, to flatten his chest. Two large scars mark his body: one across his upper left pectoral and another on his right side, souvenirs of past trauma.
Personality-wise, Mutsuki starts out kindhearted but painfully shy and self-doubting. He struggles with chronic anemia—and ironically has a deep aversion to blood despite it. These health issues feed into his broader insecurity about his role as an investigator; he genuinely questions whether he's even useful. He gets frustrated with his own weakness and angry at how his abilities stack up against his teammates.
What sets him apart, though, is his reliability. He works hard and follows orders without complaint, which makes him solid compared to the more difficult or half-hearted members of his squad. More importantly, beneath the self-doubt runs a genuine desire to help people—he won't hesitate to put himself in danger for the innocent. Over time, he shakes off some of that uncertainty, becomes noticeably more assertive, takes charge in getting his teammates coordinated, and starts connecting with people beyond his immediate circle.
