When evidence pointed elsewhere, specifically at the victim's nephew, Kipper realized he'd been fed garbage. He confronted Lunge, furious, and demanded the paper print a retraction. But Lunge wasn't about to let that happen. He knew about Kipper's affair and made it clear he'd be happy to mention it to his wife if the story didn't stay exactly as printed.
Kipper was trapped. He hated it, but he agreed to keep the false story running. The whole point was to bait Tenma—if he saw his name in print connected to the murder, he'd likely show up to investigate or clear his name, giving Lunge his chance to corner him.
