Saitou Hajime is one of the Shinsengumi's most skilled swordsmen and leads the third unit. What sets him apart is his ability to sense—and even communicate with—the thoughts of the dead, which definitely comes across as unsettling at first. But as you get further into the series, it becomes clear just how deeply committed he is to the Shinsengumi and its cause.
He's got an almost supernatural talent for disappearing into crowds. People he doesn't want noticing him rarely catch on that he's even there. Usually dressed in black, Saitou rarely cracks a smile, though he apparently gets a kick out of sneaking up on Tetsu and watching him jump. His quiet, mysterious vibe tends to make others keep their distance—which seems to be exactly how he likes it. That icy demeanor doesn't stop Tetsu from following him around anyway.
