The series' main protagonist. He struggles early on to fit into life aboard Sidonia—constantly getting into trouble and facing rejection from other residents who view him as an outsider unfamiliar with their culture and rules. Over time, though, he transforms into the ship's greatest defender and becomes something of a legendary hero to its people. He pilots Tsugumori, an older Guardian mecha that's seen better days but still gets the job done.
What sets him apart is pretty fundamental: unlike most Sidonians, who were genetically modified to draw energy from photosynthesis and only need one meal a day, he's fully human. That means he has to eat substantially more just to keep up with the ship's physical and caloric demands—a constant reminder that he doesn't quite fit the mold, even as he becomes essential to everyone's survival.
