Naoyuki is Tomoya's father. When Tomoya's mother Atsuko died during his childhood, Naoyuki was left to raise him alone. The loss sent him down a rough path—he turned to alcohol and smoking, and the two of them fought constantly over anything and everything. Things came to a head when an argument escalated and Naoyuki slammed Tomoya against the wall hard enough to dislocate his shoulder. By the time Tomoya finally got to a hospital, the damage was permanent and untreatable.
After that, something shifted in Naoyuki. He became gentler toward his son, but it felt hollow—more like how you'd treat a stranger than family. For Tomoya, this distant kindness was almost worse than the fighting had been. Unable to play basketball anymore and desperate to avoid coming home to face his father, he fell into delinquency. He even seriously considered running away, as his relationship with Naoyuki never really recovered from what happened.
