Shidou is the main character and a Raizen High School student who was adopted by the Itsuka family after being abandoned by his biological mother. His defining trait is an unusual ability to seal a Spirit's powers through a kiss—but only if that Spirit genuinely trusts and cares for him. Kotori discovered this power and essentially drafted him into Ratatoskr, an organization that uses his gift to help Spirits coexist with humanity instead of exterminating them.
He's basically your standard teenage guy who wasn't interested in girls until his little sister forced the issue. Now he's constantly surrounded by the opposite sex, which he's still getting used to. What really sets him apart, though, is his genuine kindness and empathy. He has a real gift for understanding people and accepting them for who they are—something most Spirits desperately need and have rarely found. Even Miku, who literally viewed everyone as puppets, ended up changing her entire worldview because of him.
The Sealing Power
The ability works like this: to seal a Spirit's powers, they need to develop real affection, trust, and intimacy with Shidou. Once that emotional connection reaches a certain threshold, he can seal their power with a kiss. Depending on the Spirit's original strength, he might seal all of it or just most of it. He can also tap into the powers of Spirits he's sealed, though this ability deepens with closeness and typically causes him serious physical pain to use.
Relationships
With Kotori, his adoptive sister, he maintains a protective older brother dynamic. She once made him promise to wait for her at the family restaurant no matter what, and he believed it even when it seemed impossible—that's the kind of devotion he shows.
Tohka holds a special place in his heart. He gave her that name based on the date they first met (April 10th), and he's willing to go to extreme lengths for her safety. His care for her is obvious to everyone around them.
Yoshino treats him like an older brother and hero figure. She respects and trusts him deeply—that trust is what enabled him to seal her powers in the first place.
Kurumi was the first Spirit he encountered, and definitely the most dangerous. Watching her casually kill someone left him shaken, but he decided to save her anyway after Tohka helped him understand that any Spirit could've ended up like her. She's the only one he hasn't sealed so far, though she's fallen hard for him and has a definite yandere streak. She also loves teasing him, especially about the time he had to crossdress to deal with Miku.
Miku initially hated him purely because he's male—she has serious issues with men in general. Instead of giving up, Shidou went out of his way to help her, even crossdressing just to be able to talk with her. He's also protected her through some dangerous situations.
Reine gets along with him better than most of the Fraxinus crew, though he spends a lot of time correcting her when she messes up his name.
Among his classmates, Shidou's mostly unremarkable—just another guy. That changed once Tohka and Origami started openly competing for his attention, which made a lot of his male classmates suddenly very bitter about him.
