Junpei Iori is the Main Character's best friend, though they clash constantly. He's the class clown type—the kind of guy who uses humor to cover up his real insecurities. His weapon of choice is a two-handed sword that he swings more like a baseball bat than anything else. Combat-wise, his Personas lean heavy on physical damage and party buffs, with some weak fire magic thrown in.
He joins SEES pretty early on after Akihiko finds him crying in a convenience store during the Dark Hour. Junpei had no idea he could summon a Persona until that moment, but once he found out, he didn't hesitate—he moved straight into the dorm despite Yukari's protests. A later revelation shows he'd actually met Koromaru before, years back when he'd run away from home to escape his abusive, alcoholic father.
Character designer Shigenori Soejima has called Junpei "the most important character when it comes to getting the player to buy into the story," mainly because he's the one who genuinely feels like a real teenager among all the other major characters. He also makes a quick cameo in Persona: Trinity Soul at a police station.
