Pietro is a Cardinal who becomes Pope following World War III, though by that point the Roman Catholic Church has been significantly weakened. He takes over from Matthai Reese and undergoes a notable transformation through the war, emerging as a much more noble figure than he'd been before.
Where Matthai Reese seemed more spiritually inclined, Pietro gravitates toward the actual power and authority of the papal position—and he's not particularly concerned with others' welfare. In that regard, he shares some common ground with Nikolai Tolstoy's ruthless ambition. That said, Pietro never directly worked with or supported Fiamma the way Tolstoy did. Still, he was savvy enough to exploit the chaos of the situation to his own advantage.
