Tsubame Iwato was born March 10, 1977. She had a younger sister, Tamaki, who was six years her junior. As a single mother living in Akamae, Iwate, Tsubame raised her daughter Suzume on her own. She was the crafty type—on Suzume's birthday in May 2010, she made her a wooden chair by hand.
