The story's main protagonist is a high school student who gets roped into coaching a girls' basketball team of sixth graders—not exactly his first choice. His aunt Mihoshi pushes the job on him, and he agrees to just three days of work. But when he finds out the team's actually facing disbandment without proper coaching, and realizes how much it means to Tomoka and the other girls, he's in it for real.
At his own school, things are messy. The basketball club's been shut down after their team captain caused a major scandal, leaving the whole program essentially dead in the water. That's part of what frees him up to help the younger team, though the irony isn't lost—he's coaching sixth graders while his school's own basketball scene falls apart.
