Hibird started out as just another bird in the Birds' flock, but everything changed when Hibari taught it the Namimori Middle School anthem. The bird basically imprinted on him after that—you'll see it perched on his head or shoulder constantly throughout the series. The nickname "Hibird" came naturally from this bond with Hibari.
What's interesting is that the bird actually understands what Hibari says and follows his commands. There's a scene where Hibari's about to sleep on top of the school and tells Hibird "Don't disturb me"—and the bird just flies off singing the school anthem like it knows exactly what he means. It's a weirdly endearing dynamic for a guy like Hibari.
