Hata-Onryou (畑怨霊) are youkai born from the lingering resentment of people who starved to death in fields without ever receiving proper memorial rites. Essentially vengeful spirits fueled by hunger and abandonment, they're tied to agricultural spaces and the tragic circumstances of their deaths.
The concept reflects a particularly grim aspect of Japanese folklore—the idea that a person who dies alone, unmourned, and without the spiritual closure of a funeral or remembrance can't properly move on. Instead, that suffering transforms into something supernatural and dangerous. In this case, the desperation of starvation becomes the core of the youkai's existence and power.
