Lio Convoy started out as a capable Maximal commander until renegade Predacons under Galvatron attacked his ship. He pursued them across space to the planet Gaia—really a future Earth—but got badly hurt by the Angolmois energy fields scattered across the planet. A white lion found him and saved his life. Lio Convoy scanned the lion's form to gain a beast mode, thinking it would help him survive.
The thing is, the Maximal Matrix thought he was done for and copied itself into another bot: Lio Junior. That second Maximal ended up believing Lio Convoy was actually his father, which made things complicated later on.
Over time, Lio Convoy fought to keep Galvatron from hoarding all the Angolmois energy. Their final showdown happened aboard the Nemesis, a ship the size of a planet that Galvatron wanted to use as a giant energy-draining weapon. While his team tore the Nemesis apart from the inside, Lio Convoy and Galvatron went head-to-head one last time. Galvatron was too strong, supercharged with Angolmois power—so the two Matrixes did something unexpected and merged Lio Convoy with Lio Junior. Together, they finally took Galvatron down.
But Galvatron, furious about losing, triggered his own Matrix to blow up the entire ship. The Maximals made it out of the explosion, only to get sucked into a wormhole with no way out.
