Rokurouta was a criminal sent to Kotaku Island as part of the shogun's quest to obtain the Elixir of Life. Like the other condemned prisoners chosen for this dangerous mission, he was paired with anExecutioner—in his case, Eizen Yamada Asaemon, who served as both his guard and his assigned executioner should he fail or betray the shogun's interests.
