Marie works as a nurse on the Sabaody Archipelago. Her life took a tragic turn when she and her fiancé were transporting an injured man to the hospital—they crossed paths with Saint Charloss, one of the Tenryuubito. Charloss blocked their way, kicked the wounded man down, and coldly said he'd help him die. While Marie was still processing the shock, Charloss decided he wanted her as his thirteenth wife and forced her to come with him. When her fiancé tried to object, Charloss simply shot him for the offense of standing before a Celestial Dragon.
No one on the archipelago could or would intervene as she was dragged away. Marie remained enslaved by Charloss's family until Luffy attacked the Tenryuubito, which led to her eventual freedom along with the other slaves.
