Kuroneko is a small black cat with striking green eyes who appears throughout the Trigun series. Creator Yasuhiro Nightow has confirmed she's female, and while not much is known about her personality beyond typical cat behavior, she's become an iconic recurring character—though mostly as comic relief.
She shows up in nearly every episode of the original anime, usually popping in at random moments to meow and undercut whatever's happening onscreen. Despite her constant presence, she rarely matters to the plot. Her most notable contributions are stopping Wolfwood from cheating at chess in "Escape from Pain" and briefly replacing Vash in "Hang Fire." When fans ask Nightow about her significance at conventions, he tends to shrug and say she's just easy and relaxing to draw between action sequences.
In Trigun Maximum, Kuroneko only appears in Nightow's commentary sections at the end of each volume, where she basically roasts him for being lazy and goofy.
She has a few memorable moments in Trigun Badlands Rumor as well—napping at the newsstand where Vash learns he's been framed, watching Meryl and Milly argue near a statue, and getting launched through the air during a bar brawl like everything else in the scene.
Kuroneko has also made small cameos in a couple episodes of Kekkai Sensen and Kekkai Sensen & Beyond.
