Yamasaki first notices Kato when she watches him risk himself to save a family from an alien. His willingness to actually help people strikes her as weird, so she laughs it off and decides to stick around—mostly to catch him in a contradiction, convinced someone that selfless has to be full of it. But he keeps proving her wrong. When he throws himself in front of danger again without hesitation, she feels oddly guilty and leaves him alone. That guilt doesn't last long though. She comes back to help him fight, though she mostly just gets in the way and needs rescuing herself.
Despite the rough start, she keeps following him. There's something about his genuine kindness that gets to her. Eventually she opens up about her son, and Kato shares his own story about his brother—something that makes them feel closer.
When Kato announces he'll act as bait for the hundred-point alien, Yamasaki makes him an offer: move in with her and her son. It's her way of saying she's all in. She tells him flat out that she won't let him die, no matter what happens.
