Olruggio serves as the Watchful Eye for Qifrey's atelier, and despite his gruff, no-nonsense way of talking, his actual magic has a reputation for being genuinely warm. He's become something of a legend among witches for the magical contraptions he invents—the Glowstone Path, the Snugstone, the Searneedle Wand, and plenty of others designed to help people out.
The thing about Olruggio is he comes across as harsh and blunt at first, but he's actually deeply kind. He looks after Qifrey and the atelier students, constantly cooking up magical items to help them sleep better and working with them on their spellwork. His helpfulness extends way beyond the atelier too. He's always doing things for the local villages, and the nobility there have definitely noticed—some seem almost annoyed by how much he helps. This pattern of genuine kindness has started making him question some of witch society's more outdated rules, especially the restrictions on witches practicing medicine or teaching magic to non-witches. Whenever anyone brings it up though, he brushes it off as nothing special or just part of his job.
His biggest weakness is deadlines. He's terrible with them, constantly overworking himself and pulling late nights to finish commissions. He usually looks exhausted because of it—dark circles, the whole deal. Sometimes he just crashes on the atelier couch or oversleeps entirely and misses things. Ironically, he's always telling Qifrey's apprentices how important sleep is, which they definitely find hypocritical.
He gets flustered easily and will absolutely lie and say he doesn't like being praised. He was pretty vocal about complaining when the girls started calling him "professor," but he stopped making a real fuss about it as time went on—now he just occasionally tells other people they're not actually his students, mostly for show.
Olruggio met Qifrey back when they were both apprentices in the Great Hall, and the two became close friends pretty quickly. He helped Qifrey investigate the Brimmed Caps and even assisted him with the Tower of Tomes, though he never managed to get inside the library himself. When Qifrey eventually left to start his own atelier, Olruggio went with him. He also played a role in helping Qifrey find his apprentices and was around for their first run-in with Richeh.
Brushbuddy is genuinely fond of him—the creature will climb all over him and rock around happily whenever he shows up, which says something about his character.
On a lighter note, according to character sketches, Olruggio has a taste for alcoholic drinks that are strong but on the sweeter side. The diamond pattern on his cap is pretty common in Ghodrey too—younger Utowin and his father both wear similar designs.
