Kotsuzuka earned the nickname "Ghost" thanks to his signature strategy of using ghost-themed Duel Monsters. He competed in both major tournaments that defined the series—Duelist Kingdom and Battle City.
During Duelist Kingdom, Kotsuzuka teamed up with Takaido and Satake alongside Bandit Keith, who initially seemed like an ally before betraying the group. His run in Battle City was cut short when he faced off against Dark Bakura, who defeated him decisively.
The anime takes some liberties with his story. Rather than appearing off-screen, his Duelist Kingdom companions Satake and Takaido actually duel alongside him on camera. And instead of being killed outright, Dark Bakura banishes all three of them to the Shadow Realm—making for a grimmer but less permanent fate than the manga version suggested.
