The story's main protagonist, Tatsumi originally headed to the capital with straightforward goals: join the military, make money, and send it back to his struggling village. That plan fell apart fast. After barely escaping a trap set by some sadistic nobles, he stumbled onto the truth about how deeply corrupt the Empire really was. That's when Night Raid recruited him—their whole deal is eliminating the Empire's rotten core by killing the worst offenders.
Things got awkward when Tatsumi entered an Empire-sponsored fighting tournament and somehow caught the attention of Esdeath, who decided right then and there that he'd be her lover. He was definitely not thrilled about it.
Despite being young and inexperienced compared to his teammates, Tatsumi's got serious hidden potential. What he lacks in skill he makes up for with an almost scary growth rate—every battle makes him noticeably stronger. Akame and Bulat have both remarked on how quickly he develops, and that rapid improvement is something pretty much everyone around him has picked up on, whether they're allies or enemies.
