Petra lived in the same town as Doctor Schumann and was a widow whose son had abandoned her five years prior. Despite her circumstances, she kept cooking goulash for two—a habit she couldn't shake—and this was partly why Dr. Schumann made a point to visit. When Dr. Tenma came through town, he discovered she had a subarachnoid hemorrhage and performed emergency surgery to save her life. Her son, however, was less interested in gratitude; he wanted to apprehend Tenma to secure his own promotion. Schumann confronted him about it, reminding him that Tenma had just saved his mother's life, which appealed to whatever conscience the man had left.
