Brownbeard is a massive guy—we're talking roughly three times the height and four times the width of an average person. He's got a long brown beard split into three neat braids, plus a matching mustache. His outfit is pretty minimal: a large coat that barely reaches his shoulders over an open shirt, leaving his chest completely exposed except for a wrestling belt-style piece with his jolly roger emblazoned on it. His hair sticks out from under a tricorne hat and is braided back.
When Whitebeard died, Brownbeard saw his chance and claimed control of Foodvalten, one of the New World islands that had been under Whitebeard's protection. It didn't last long, though. The Hawkins Pirates showed up, and Basil Hawkins casually asked Brownbeard his name—which apparently was enough to set him off. Brownbeard launched into a proud rant about his bounty being over 80 million and his greatness, only for Hawkins to tell him his name sounds ridiculous. Before they even properly fought, Hawkins drew his sword and claimed he could "see the shadow of death" on him. Brownbeard and his crew got demolished.
The loss cost him dearly—literally. He lost both his legs in that fight. After washing up on Punk Hazard, Caesar Clown fitted him with artificial replacements. Later, Trafalgar Law used his Devil Fruit powers to swap those legs for alligator legs instead, turning Brownbeard into an alligator centaur of sorts and actually letting him move around again.
