Aoki is an unorthodox lightweight boxer and a core member of the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. He got into boxing after getting his ass handed to him by Takamura Mamoru back in high school—a humbling experience he shared with his best friend Kimura Tetsuya. The two of them swore they'd beat Takamura eventually, but by the time they actually became decent boxers, they'd moved past that and ended up respecting him instead.
Before boxing, Aoki was a delinquent punk. He and Kimura spent their school days fighting with rival gangs, which probably explains why his boxing style is so. creative. His signature moves—the Frog Punch and the Look-Away—are basically tricks designed to confuse and mess with opponents. This gimmicky approach worked well enough to score a draw against Japanese lightweight champion Imae Katsuka. More recently, he's been in an ongoing rivalry with Philippine champion Papaya Dachiu, with two consecutive draws between them.
What makes Aoki memorable isn't really his technical skill, though. Fans know him as the prankster of the gym—he's constantly showing off random talents that have absolutely nothing to do with boxing, which has become a running joke. He's also the wingman to Ippo's romantic situation, since his girlfriend Tomiko is friends with Kumi, making him weirdly useful when Ippo needs to get close to her.
Then there's his notoriously bizarre taste in women. Unlike his teammates, Aoki's genuinely attracted to girls everyone else considers unattractive—supposedly stemming from getting dumped hard by a beautiful woman years ago. Despite this odd preference, he's managed to keep a girlfriend longer than most of the other guys, which says something.
