As one of Europe's most powerful magicians, she'd been running France from the shadows for years, though the French government officially put her under house arrest and stripped her of political power. Turned out that was all staged though. Come the 20th novel, it's revealed the house arrest was actually a trick to throw her enemies off the scent. She never actually lost control, and she used the opportunity to orchestrate an invasion of England, where she ends up going head-to-head with the Second Princess Carrisa of the UK.
